CONCEPT NOTE

The demographic change the world faces today makes “smart growth” inevitable for the cities. According to the United Nation’s studies, today more than half of the world’s population live in urban areas. Projections show that this is expected to increase to 70% by 2050. The urban areas where half of the world’s population live is expected double in just 15 years from now.

The World Bank’s data reveals that around 72% of Turkey’s population, reaching 80 million, live in urban areas and predictions show that this rate will rise to 80% in 2030 with a population surging to approximately 88 million. This staggering uptick in urban populations facing the world and Turkey makes it imperative to use limited resources efficiently. In this sense, “a smart city” trend is increasing in the world starting from developed countries.

Given this background, Çanakkale on My Mind Project, initiated with the collaboration of Kale Group, Turkey Informatics Foundation and Novusens Smart City Institute in 2017, aims to help Çanakkale, a city situated between İstanbul and İzmir, lying at the heart of the region so called golden ring, in its journey to transform into a smart city.

With the ownership of Kale Group and collaboration of Turkish Informatics Foundation (TBV), Novusens Smart City Institute has been running “Çanakkale on my Mind” Smart City Transformation Initiative since Feb 2017.

The project aims to increase the liveability, sustainability and competitiveness level of the City of Çanakkale through Smart City Transformation. Çanakkale has been the first medium size city in Turkey that applied a systematic smart city transformation process.

During the first phase of the project (Current Situational Analysis), the top priority areas of the city were identified jointly with all of the local stakeholders. In the second phase of the project, the operating and management architecture of Smart City Platform of Çanakkale was studied. Several smart city trainings were delivered to all of the stakeholders of the city for capacity building purposes and quick win smart city project ideas were developed and proposed to the related stakeholders.

During the second phase of the project, Town Twinning Project of EU was granted to the Çanakkale Municipality together with the Spanish City of Tarragona, where both cities have benefited from their cultural heritage and will continue to do so. This town-twinning project has been one of the solid outcomes of “Çanakkale on my Mind” Smart City Transformation Initiative.

In the coming third phase of the project, several smart city projects are aimed to be developed and implemented by local stakeholders and related national partners which will contribute to the social and economic development of the city.

A lot of capacity building activities were performed in Çanakkale during Çanakkale on my Mind Project. These activities included several smart city trainings, seminars, awareness rising events and workshops, surveys and face to face interviews which have been documented in the project reports published and distributed in a wide manner. To share all of these experiences gained during this transformation journey, and to create related inspiration on all of the stakeholders to develop smart and sustainable solutions through collaboration, an international conference has been planned that will be held on 19 September 2019 in Çanakkale at Troy Museum with the theme of Sustainable and Smart: “Çanakkale on my Mind”.

The Conference, designed as an extension of Çanakkale on My Mind Initiative, aims to provide insight into the smart and sustainable cities concept in the world and in Turkey through best practices that would create new paths for Çanakkale under the umbrella initiative Çanakkale on My Mind Smart City Transformation.

The Conference will last one day, which will include openings and keynote speeches followed by two main sessions on Sustainable & Smart Mobility, Sustainable & Smart Environment, and 3 Breakout Sessions (Sustainable & Smart Economy, Smart and Inclusive Cities, EU Town Twinning Programme).

The Conference is open to the participation of representatives from public institutions, local authorities, NGOs, academia and private sector. This is an invitation-only event.

We need to ask the following questions to ourselves to design the future together:

  • What will be the new mobility models for the sustainable and smart future?
  • How will the cities get the benefits of technology in environment and energy for the sustainable and smart future?
  • How can the local economy get smart for the sustainable and prosper future?

We will all be looking for the answers of these questions in the Sustainable and Smart: Çanakkale on my Mind Conference with the active contribution of the participants.
